Honoring Dr. King in Phoenix

Today we honor and celebrate the life of an extraordinary man - Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King’s tireless fight for justice and civil rights has earned him a place, not only in history, but in our hearts. He was and is a beacon of hope, an inspiration for millions.

It was my privilege as Phoenix Mayor to assist Councilman Calvin C. Goode in making Phoenix the first Arizona City to set aside a day to honor Dr. King and then to work with Interfaith leaders to finally achieve the state holiday we observe today.

The first Phoenix MLK Day march, with Rev Warren Stewart, Art Hamilton, Carolyn Warner, Tommy Espinosa and friends all.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”- MLK

Dr. King’s work is not over. His life reminds us of the power of the people united against injustice.  We honor him by committing to service to our community, something many individuals and groups are doing today. Join an event in your area.

I plan to serve today by collecting at least 10 signatures on the Outlaw Dirty Money petition to fight against the secret forces trying to control Arizona elections. For information, please go to OutlawDirtyMoney.com

Whatever it is, do something special today to serve our fellow Arizonans.
